The Wellesley Teachers Association is endorsing Matt Kelley and Melissa Martin in the upcoming school committee election on Tuesday, March 7. Although historically the WTA has not weighed in on town elections, in this case we want to recommend these two candidates whom we believe will do the most to support our work as educators and our advocacy for the children in the Wellesley Public Schools.
During his first term as a member of the School Committee, Mr. Kelley has demonstrated a very professional and thoughtful approach in his work on behalf of the school district. Mr. Kelley brought this professionalism and thoughtfulness to the last round of collective bargaining with the teachers. While the WTA and Mr. Kelley have not agreed on every issue — and it is important that we don’t — the teachers appreciate his willingness to listen to our interests and concerns. Our endorsement of Mr. Kelley stems from our confidence that he has acted and will continue to act with the interest of the whole district at heart, and from his conscientious and productive collaboration with professionals throughout the school system.
The WTA recommends Melissa Martin based on her track record of clear commitment to and constructive support of the Wellesley Public Schools. Ms. Martin has volunteered in a variety of capacities at both the elementary and middle school levels, including serving as the PTO treasurer at Sprague Elementary School. Teachers have described Ms. Martin as an involved and invested parent who communicates well with the staff and respects their professionalism. This level of commitment and familiarity with the Wellesley Public Schools will serve Ms. Martin well on School Committee.
The Wellesley Teachers Association endorses Mr. Kelley and Ms. Martin for School Committee based on the positive interactions teachers have had with these candidates and because we think that they will most effectively guide and advocate for the Wellesley Public Schools.
